I'm a simple fan who enjoys the little things in sports. An infield, freshly watered down in anticipation of nine innings of baseball. Rolling a ball down the line before the game has begun to see which way the dirt guides the ball, fair or foul. I love the simple fact that the foul poles and lines are called that, yet if the ball hits either one it is fair. I love walking into the ballpark and catching a glimpse of the fresh green grass mowed in harmony while becoming intoxicated by the various smells a ballpark brings. Grilled onions on my hot dog, an ice cold beer just in time for batting practice and peanuts in the fourth inning. I love that the traditional organ hasn't been replaced in most ballparks. I have one simple philosophy on pitchers batting: don't let them do it, and you can take that strategy argument somewhere else because I want nothing to do with it. Hall-of-Fame hitters can't stay consistent batting once every five days so do you really think a pitcher can do better? You want pitchers to bat? Then put them in right field the other four days in-between starts. Let me ask you something else, if the heart of the opposition's order is coming up in the eighth inning, wouldn't it be wise to use your closer then instead of the ninth against lesser hitters, and if so, shouldn't he still get the save? Baseball is a game filled with little things like this, which is why it is the greatest sport in the world. You other fans can keep soccer and football, I'll take baseball.
